Model Train Sound System $149 |

Model Train Sound is an IBM computer (or compatible*) based sound system that allows you to easily add sounds to your model train layout. The system includes all necessary hardware and software components. The hardware consists of computer circuitry with both input and output capabilities. The input circuitry consists of ten switch/sensor inputs.
The output circuitry
consists of computer controlled switching circuitry to connect and deliver
sounds to ten speakers, located throughout your layout. Different sounds can be heard from different
speakers.
The Model Train Sound
system (MTS) uses sounds created by the sound card in an IBM PC. Most computers already have one sound
card. It is recommended that a desktop
PC be used instead of a laptop. A
desktop PC would automate the loading of software and would be much cheaper to
obtain. You will need to add another
sound card to your PC to make full use of the MTS system. The MTS software is written to recognize and
use two sound cards. You can find sound
cards for sale on eBay for less than $10.
The MTS system makes use
of two sound cards so that two sounds can be heard at the same time from
different speaker locations in the layout.
For instance it is possible to have a dog barking behind a house and
lumber being cut at the local sawmill.
A particular sound will be heard whenever the associated input sensor is
triggered. In the case of a
push-button, being triggered just means the push-button has been pressed.
The kit of parts includes
ten 2” speakers and connectors. All
connections to the system are made using screw-type terminals. The system runs on a 12-volt power supply.
On a PC, each sound card
has its own volume control. However
there are also two audio amplifiers on
the MTS system board. Two volume
controls are mounted on the MTS system case.

The included installation
and operations manual shows some sample circuits for connecting sensors to the
system. On the installation CD there are
100 wav files of different sounds.
This system while easy to
install might require the use of a soldering iron and some basic electronics
type tools. Some computer knowledge is
also required. It is not recommended
for children without adult supervision.
