Yes our new HO speedometer car communicates with your Android Smart Phone.  An Iphone app will soon be available. 

We created a loop of Bachmann EZ Track on the back porch.  The carpet is green so it looks like a nice layout.  We even have several buildings.  The simulated locomotive follows the loop of track and continually displays the speed and distance, in the screen center.  It can also announce the speed if you like.         

The car continuously measures its speed (not just in one place like trackside speedometers).  As the car moves along, not only is its speed measured; but the distance it has traveled is measured too.  These two measurements are displayed on your Android Smart phone in real time.

We developed the app for an Android Smart phone.  (Samsung makes most of them.)  The communication is done using Bluetooth.  The Bluetooth signal can travel 30 feet.  So if your phone was in the center of your layout, you could receive the Bluetooth signal from a circular distance with a radius of 30 feet in all directions. 

Our app displays the speed of the car as well as the distance the car has traveled.  But wait there is a lot more.  You can use the car to measure the scale miles of your layout's track.  This is something you would probably want to know.  

The distance measurement is reset to zero when the car passes the 12 on our layout picture.  This is where you will place the reset LED.  A sensor in the car will detect the LED light and reset the distance measurement. 

We also display a map of a train layout (on your Smart Phone screen) and as the car travels around the track a small locomotive is shown (on the phone) following the simulated train track.  Markers (similar to a clock) are located on the layout picture to represent locations on your train layout. 

USE YOUR OWN PICTURE 

Smart Phones have excellent cameras in it.  If you hold the camera above your layout and take a picture, that picture can be used by the speedometer program.  You will then drag the simulated locomotive around the track and record its location at twelve places.  The twelve places should represent the twelve hours on a clock.  This can all be done using your finger and the phone's touch screen.  The tiny simulated locomotive will follow the stored place locations when it moves around the track (using input from the distance calculation).  The twelve places should be evenly spaced and roughly represent the twelve hours on the face of a clock.  Detailed instructions are provided as to how to do this.

SPEED ANNOUNCED 

The Smart Phone also announces the speed information (using text to speech) which is done every X seconds.  The value of X seconds, can be set in the software.  You can also have your phone say other things such as the locomotive's road name and number.  This is optional.  For example, the following  could be said: BNSF 3729 speed 35 miles per hour.  

Our speedometer car uses either a Bachmann HO Thomas Salt Wagon or a Bachmann HO Thomas Ventilated Van.  We use both.  Please let us know if you have a preference.  The Bachmann car comes with English hook and loop couplers.  We replace these couplers with Kadee #5 knuckle couplers.  This car has spoke wheels and we count the spokes to determine the wheel revolutions and speed.

The white salt car is 3 long and 1.25 wide. The blue ventilated van is about 0.25 longer.

The bottom of the car shows the sensor and the gear wheel. Kadee #5 couplers are also shown.

The car runs on a rechargeable Lithium battery, mounted inside that should last about 8 hours.  A charger is included. 

The cost of our HO Android Speedometer car is $129.  Shipping and handling is $10.  Instructions for downloading the app will be provided after purchase.  We plan to offer an Iphone version of the car very soon.    

The car can be used to help you speed match HO DCC locomotives.  When building consists where you have several locomotives connected together, it is important that the speeds are matched.

SPEED CVS

The three CVs that control the speed are: 2, 6 and 5.  Each one can hold a value from 0 to 255.  Changing the value in each of the CVs, will impact the speed at that speed step.
